PRESS RELEASE
Date 27th May 2020
Global Sikh Council would like to strongly voice against the recent decision made by Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) president S Manjinder S Sirsa of giving the Gold reserve and Money of Gurudwara Sahibs at Delhi to the PM Fund – Central Government of India allegedly to be kept as Gold bonds in this time of crisis.
While we are heartened many Sikh Organizations recently stepped up to help the needy in this time of needs, we fail to see the logic behind giving the Gold reserves of the Delhi Gurdawars to a Political party’s PM fund.
We need to acknowledge that Sikh families are also struggling with poverty and illiteracy. Sikh families are not able to afford medical facilities. Many Sikh men are suffering from alcoholism. Sikh youth is struggling with drugs and joblessness. Sikh farmers are commiting suicides. DSGMC should actively look into helping these Sikhs rather than give the community donated gold for political reasons.
We strongly believe that this Gold Reserve cannot and should not be given away for any purpose other than on Gurudwara Sahib and the welfare of the Sikh Community. It would be more appropriate if the Sikh Sangat takes such big decisions collectively rather than made on their behalf by the few at the management committee. By not listening to the larger Sikh community, we believe, in this case, DSGMC is breaching the trust of the Sikh Community.
We hope better sense will prevail, and DSGPC will reconsider this decision.
