Maa Boli Punjabi

Maa Boli Punjabi

In past few years the followers of Punjabi language have dwindled down from 7th place in the world to the 12 th place. Unless the trend is reversed, Punjabis stand to lose even more and Punjabi might soon be a language of the past. The Sikhs stand to loose the most as Punjabi is the main language of the Sikh Scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib. If the reader does not know Punjabi it would be so difficult to understand the message of the Bani enshrined in Sri Guru Granth Sahib. It goes without saying that the spirit of the message can never be fully translated into a different language due to cultural differences and limitations of the languages.

With that in mind, Global Sikh Council (GSC) has initiated a MAA BOLI PUNJABI project. The focus is to motivate parents to speak Punjabi at home and motivate children to speak Punjabi with their friends. This project also provides an opportunity to the children to befriend other Punjabi speaking children worldwide.

To start exposing the children to Punjabi, the team is producing animation Lullaby’s, bedtime stories, and rhymes for the toddlers and Gurmukhi alphabets and books for the three to  five-year-old and books for the older ones.

The approach being used for the four to fourteen years old is to hold online competitions on various cultural subjects in Punjabi. Punjabi heritage arts like drawings and performing arts are included in the competitions to encourage more active participants These competitions are held at international level so the kids from various countries and faiths can participate.
