Global Sikh Council welcomes SGPC Elections and further appeals to include’ Sikh diaspora living abroad in Elections

The Global Sikh Council (GSC) extends a warm welcome to the recent announcements regarding the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) elections and the commencement of preparations for this significant event.

The GSC acknowledges the importance of the SGPC elections, recognizing the profound impact it holds for the Sikh community. Notably, the last SGPC elections took place in 2011, and the community has been eagerly anticipating this opportunity to exercise their democratic rights.

Furthermore, the GSC emphasizes the significance of considering the sentiments of Sikhs residing abroad. These individuals maintain a deep connection with Gurudwaras and have a genuine stake in the community’s affairs.
Therefore, the GSC appeals earnestly to the State Government, Chief Minister of Punjab and the Election Commission to explore avenues for involving the Sikh diaspora in this vital electoral process.

Earlier in May, SS Saron, chief commissioner of the Gurdwara Election Commission, had written to the Punjab government, urging the preparation of electoral rolls for the SGPC elections. It is worth noting that the SGPC, established in 1920, has played a pivotal role as the apex governing body for Sikh historical gurdwaras in India, witnessing significant shifts in its jurisdiction over time.

The Global Sikh Council stands ready to support and collaborate with all stakeholders in advancing the welfare of the Sikh community. We express our gratitude for this significant step towards upholding democratic values within the Sikh faith.
