Global Sikh Council Condemns Attack on Sikh Student at Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, Calls for Swift Justice

The Global Sikh Council expresses deep outrage over the violent assault on Pavit Singh Gujral, a Sikh student at Sri Guru Tegh Bahadur Khalsa College, Delhi University, whose turban was shamefully removed during a clash between student factions. This incident, which took place as Pavit Singh was filing his nomination for student elections, is a direct attack on the religious identity of Sikhs and the values of respect and tolerance we hold dear.

As per reports, this unfortunate event occurred on campus when outsiders allegedly disrupted the election nomination process. The violence was captured in a viral video showing Pavit Singh being assaulted, resulting in his turban falling, which is deeply offensive to Sikh religious sentiments. According to a report by PTC News on Monday, September 23, 2024, this egregious act has sparked widespread outrage. An FIR (No. 170/2024) has been registered, including non-bailable charges under sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) such as criminal intimidation and promoting enmity between groups.

The Global Sikh Council urges the government to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident and bring the culprits to justice swiftly. We call on law enforcement to ensure that the culprits responsible for this hateful crime are held accountable. The dignity of religious symbols, such as the turban, must be protected, and such acts of disrespect should never be tolerated.

GSC also calls upon the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) to extend its full support to Pavit Singh and his family. The DSGMC plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and rights of Sikhs, and their intervention is critical to preventing the recurrence of such incidents.

The Global Sikh Council stands firm in its commitment to defending the religious freedoms of Sikhs and all communities. We urge the authorities to take necessary measures to maintain peace and respect on campuses across the country, ensuring that educational institutions remain spaces of learning, harmony, and mutual respect for all.
