Global Sikh Council successful meeting with University of North Carolina, Charlotte on the issue of Kirpan.
A Sikh student was handcuffed on the campus of UNC Charlotte on 22nd Sept. Global Sikh Council reached out to the University Administration to have a dialogue on the basics of Sikh Religion. The University was quick to respond, and an online meeting was held on 30th Sept 2022.
The speakers present on behalf of Global Sikh Council (GSC) were Gulbarg Singh Basi (US), Gurpreet Singh GP (Bahrain), Dr Kala Singh (Canada), Mandeep Kaur (Dubai), Dr Jaswant Singh (US), and Dr Gurnam Singh (UK). From UNC Charlotte, the meeting was attended by Dr. Sharon Gaber (Chancellor), Dr. Brandon Wolfe (Chief Diversity Officer), Dr. Rich Amon (Vice Chancellor for Business Affairs including the Police and Public Safety Department), Ms. Kim Bradley (Chief of Staff), and Ms. Christy Jackson (Senior Director for Reputation Management and Communications).
The meeting started with the message of Dr Sharon Gaber where she expressed regret over the 22nd Sept incident and conveyed her efforts to ensure that such incidents don’t happen again. Gulbarg Singh Basi gave a brief presentation about the Sikh Religion. He emphasized that Sikhi principles are based on the Hukam, that is, the Will or the Divine Law. And Kirpan for a Sikh is not equivalent to sword, dagger, or knife, but it is an article of faith for Kirpa (mercy) and Aan (honor). The message was well accepted by the University team.
After the presentation, the university representatives raised few questions which were candidly answered by the GSC panel. GSC further offered its help in educating university staff and students, in whatever way possible. In her note of thanks, Dr Sharon Gaber mentioned, “We are also grateful for the candid discussion and sage advice that your colleagues and you provided us as we strive to support our Sikh students and employees and consider policy revisions to ensure appropriate religious accommodations.”
Sikhs are very much aware that the unfortunate incidents of harassment of Sikhs for their appearance is not a new thing. This is not the first time, and it will not be the last time. But it’s the collective responsibility of society to ensure that no one must suffer harassment for their belief, color, sex, clothes, or articles of faith. The way, administration of UNC Charlotte responded to the situation is worth appreciating. The meeting between Global Sikh Council and The University of North Carolina has set the right example to resolve the community issues by engaging in constructive dialogue.

22 ਸਤੰਬਰ 2022 ਨੂੰ ਯੂਐਨਸੀ ਸ਼ਾਰਲੋਟ ਦੇ ਕੈਂਪਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਇੱਕ ਸਿੱਖ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀ ਨੂੰ ਕਿਰਪਾਨ ਪਹਿਣਨ ਕਰਕੇ ਹੱਥਕੜੀ ਲਗਾਈ ਗਈ ਸੀ। ਗਲੋਬਲ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਦੀਆਂ ਬੁਨਿਆਦੀ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਤੱਕ ਪਹੁੰਚ ਕੀਤੀ ਸੀ। ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਨੇ ਤੁਰੰਤ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ, ਅਤੇ 30 ਸਤੰਬਰ 2022 ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਆਨਲਾਈਨ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ।
ਇਸ ਮੌਕੇ ਗਲੋਬਲ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਂਸਲ (ਜੀਐਸਸੀ) ਦੀ ਤਰਫ਼ੋਂ ਮੌਜੂਦ ਬੁਲਾਰਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਗੁਲਬਰਗ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਸੀ (ਯੂ.ਐਸ.), ਗੁਰਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਜੀ.ਪੀ. (ਬਹਿਰੀਨ), ਡਾ: ਕਾਲਾ ਸਿੰਘ (ਕੈਨੇਡਾ), ਮਨਦੀਪ ਕੌਰ (ਦੁਬਈ), ਡਾ: ਜਸਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ (ਯੂ.ਐਸ.) ਅਤੇ ਡਾ: ਗੁਰਨਾਮ ਸਿੰਘ (ਯੂ.ਕੇ) ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹੋਏ। ਯੂਐਨਸੀ ਸ਼ਾਰਲੋਟ ਵਲੋਂ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਵਿੱਚ ਡਾ. ਸ਼ੈਰਨ ਗੈਬਰ (ਚਾਂਸਲਰ), ਡਾ. ਬਰੈਂਡਨ ਵੁਲਫ਼, (ਮੁੱਖ ਵਿਭਿੰਨਤਾ/ਚੀਫ ਡਾਇਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀ), ਡਾ. ਰਿਚ ਅਮੋਨ (ਪੁਲਿਸ ਅਤੇ ਜਨਤਕ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਸਮੇਤ ਵਪਾਰਕ ਮਾਮਲਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਵਾਈਸ ਚਾਂਸਲਰ), ਸ਼੍ਰੀਮਤੀ ਕਿਮ ਬ੍ਰੈਡਲੀ (ਚੀਫ਼ ਆਫ਼ ਸਟਾਫ), ਅਤੇ ਮਿਸ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਟੀ ਜੈਕਸਨ (ਸੀਨੀਅਰ ਡਾਇਰੈਕਟਰ ਫਾਰ ਰਿਪਿਊਟੇਸ਼ਨ ਮੈਨੇਜਮੈਂਟ ਐਂਡ ਕਮਿਊਨੀਕੇਸ਼ਨਜ਼) ਸ਼ਾਮਿਲ ਹੋਏ।
ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਦੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂਆਤ ਡਾ: ਸ਼ੈਰਨ ਗੈਬਰ ਦੇ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਨਾਲ ਹੋਈ ਜਿੱਥੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ 22 ਸਤੰਬਰ 2022 ਦੀ ਘਟਨਾ ‘ਤੇ ਅਫਸੋਸ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨ ਦਿਵਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਅਜਿਹੀਆਂ ਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਦੁਬਾਰਾ ਨਾ ਹੋਣ। ਗੁਲਬਰਗ ਸਿੰਘ ਬੱਸੀ ਨੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਰਮ ਬਾਰੇ ਇਕ ਸਲਾਈਡ ਸ਼ੋਅ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਬਹੁਤ ਹੀ ਵਧੀਆ ਸੰਖੇਪ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਦਿੱਤੀ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਇਸ ਗੱਲ ‘ਤੇ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਝਾਇਆ ਕਿ ਸਿੱਖੀ ਸਿਧਾਂਤ ਹੁਕਮ ਭਾਵ ਰਜ਼ਾ ਜਾਂ ਰੱਬੀ ਕਾਨੂੰਨ ‘ਤੇ ਅਧਾਰਤ ਹਨ। ਅਤੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਲਈ ਕਿਰਪਾਨ ਤਲਵਾਰ ਜਾਂ ਛੁਰੇ ਬਰਾਬਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਇਹ ਸਿੱਖ ਧਾਰਮਕ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਦਾ ਹਿੱਸਾ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਕਿਰਪਾ (ਦਇਆ) ਅਤੇ ਆਨ (ਸਵੈਮਾਨ) ਲਈ ਹੈ। ਇਸ ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ ਨੂੰ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੀ ਟੀਮ ਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਚੰਗੀ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਅਤੇ ਸਵੀਕਾਰ ਕੀਤਾ।
ਸੰਖੇਪ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਨੁਮਾਇੰਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਕੁਝ ਸਵਾਲ ਪੁਛੇ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਜਵਾਬ ਜੀਐਸਸੀ ਪੈਨਲ ਨੇ ਬੜੀ ਸਪੱਸ਼ਟਤਾ ਨਾਲ ਦਿੱਤੇ। ਜੀਐਸਸੀ ਨੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਦੇ ਸਟਾਫ਼ ਅਤੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖਿਅਤ ਕਰਨ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਹਰ ਸੰਭਵ ਮਦਦ ਦੀ ਪੇਸ਼ਕਸ਼ ਵੀ ਕੀਤੀ । ਆਪਣੇ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਦੇ ਨੋਟ ਵਿੱਚ, ਡਾ. ਸ਼ੈਰਨ ਗੈਬਰ ਨੇ ਕਿਹਾ, “ਤੁਸੀਂ ਅਤੇ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਸਹਿਯੋਗੀਆਂ ਵਲੋਂ ਦਿੱਤੀ ਅਹਿਮ ਜਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਵੀਚਾਰਾਂ ਲਈ ਬਹੁਤ ਧੰਨਵਾਦ ਅਤੇ ਅਸੀਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਕਰਮਚਾਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹਰ ਸਮਰਥਨ ਦੇਣ ਦੀ ਕੋਸ਼ਿਸ਼ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਅਤੇ ਢੁਕਵੀਂ ਧਾਰਮਿਕ ਖੁੱਲ ਨੂੰ ਯਕੀਨੀ ਬਣਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਨੀਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੋਧਾਂ ‘ਤੇ ਵਿਚਾਰ ਕਰਾਂਗੇ।”
ਸਿੱਖਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਆਪਣੀ ਦਿੱਖ ਲਈ ਪਰੇਸ਼ਾਨ ਕਰਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੰਦਭਾਗੀਆਂ ਘਟਨਾਵਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਨਵੀਂ ਗੱਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਸਿੱਖ ਇਸ ਮੁੱਦੇ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਹਨ। ਇਹ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਅਤੇ ਇਹ ਆਖਰੀ ਵਾਰ ਵੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋਵੇਗਾ। ਇਹ ਸੁਨਿਸ਼ਚਿਤ ਕਰਨਾ ਸਮਾਜ ਦੀ ਸਾਂਝੀ ਜ਼ਿੰਮੇਵਾਰੀ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਕਿਸੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਧਰਮ, ਰੰਗ, ਲਿੰਗ, ਕੱਪੜਿਆਂ ਜਾਂ ਵਿਸ਼ਵਾਸ ਦੀਆਂ ਵਸਤਾਂ ਲਈ ਪਰੇਸ਼ਾਨੀ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਨਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਪਵੇ। ਜਿਸ ਤਰੀਕੇ ਨਾਲ, ਯੂਐਨਸੀ ਸ਼ਾਰਲੋਟ ਦੇ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਸਨ ਨੇ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਦਾ ਜਵਾਬ ਦਿੱਤਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਸ਼ਲਾਘਾਯੋਗ ਹੈ। ਗਲੋਬਲ ਸਿੱਖ ਕੌਂਸਲ ਅਤੇ ਯੂਨੀਵਰਸਿਟੀ ਆਫ ਨਾਰਥ ਕੈਰੋਲੀਨਾ ਵਿਚਕਾਰ ਹੋਈ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਨੇ ਉਸਾਰੂ ਗੱਲਬਾਤ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਭਾਈਚਾਰਕ ਮੁੱਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਹੱਲ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਸਹੀ ਮਿਸਾਲ ਕਾਇਮ ਕੀਤੀ ਹੈ।
